Flexible pond
liners are a must when creating a pond that is not already preformed
with concrete. Flexible pond liners keep your pond water from quickly
draining away and they are easier to work with than rigid pond liners.
There are a few different types of flexible pond liners, each with their
own advantages.
· 40-80 mil PVC liners: these liners have an ultraviolet inhibitor,
are non-toxic to pond life and have a lifespan of 10 years of more.
These liners do not tend to do well in winter as they crack and are
not easy to patch.
· Butyl rubber flexible pond liners: are UV resistant and have
a 20 year lifespan. These liners may contain toxic ingredients which
leak into the water. They are very expensive, difficult to patch, and
are thick, making them very difficult to make corners and curves.
· HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) liners: non-toxic, have a
lifespan of 10 years, but are much less expensive than PVC liners. Their
disadvantages are they don’t do well in cold climates, or hard
to find and usually have no guarantee.
· EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) liners: this flexible
pond liner has several advantages. It is non-toxic, UV resistant, has
a lifespan of 20 years, more flexible than PVC and very inexpensive.
It also works best in cold climates.
