Garden pond
pumps are not always needed for every pond, but they are very useful,
especially for beginners. The only time that a pump is not needed is
if you have a smaller pond with just the right amount of fish, plants,
and biological medium in it to keep the water toxin-free and clean.
Learning this delicate balance can take a while, though, which is why
a garden pond pump is recommended for either larger ponds or beginners.
Choosing the right garden pond pump for your pond is also very important.
What you need is a pump that will circulate and filter all the water
in your pond every two hours. So, for example, if you have a 1000 gallon
pond, you want to look for a pump with a 500 GPH (gallons per hour).
If your pond has a fountain, waterfall, or a cascade, then you will
likely need a stronger pump to not only filter and aerate the water,
but also to power the water feature.
If you have an external pump, you will need a 220 volt line with its
own circuit breaker. You can install this yourself, but it is recommended
to have an expert do it if this is your first time. If you have a submersible
pump, you will need to clean it weekly to keep the filter free of debris.
Use an external pump if you have a pond greater than 1000 gallons of
water, or if you need more power. Otherwise, a submersible pump will
do.
