Koi ponds
are a little different from other ponds as Koi fish require specific
elements to live. Regular ponds require little maintenance and can
be a simple and small water feature in your garden. Koi ponds, on
the other hand, are usually larger, require a lot more maintenance,
and are more expensive. To many, though, it is worth it so that they
might have the opportunity to raise Koi fish.
Some of the elements that Koi ponds need are biological filters,
plants, possibly a mechanical pump, and certain types of pond liners.
First, if you are going to have a Koi pond, then you have to choose
the correct pond liner. Do not use concrete as they have toxins that
will be released into the water killing your fish. The other types
of pond liners such as fiberglass and flexible liners are safe for
the fish.
Second, for your Koi pond, you need a biological filtration system
set up. This is very simple as all you need are gravel, aquatic plants,
and certain types of small ammonia-eating bacteria. The bacteria will
usually grow among the biological medium such as gravel or pea-sized
foam. Find out from your local garden center what they recommend as
a biological medium for your Koi pond. Small animals such as snails
are also helpful in keeping the levels of toxins down in the water.
The last element that should be considered in your Koi pond is a
mechanical pump. Since Koi grow better in a larger pond, it is recommended
to have an external pump. These pumps assist in keeping the water
clean and healthy for the Koi and can also add a beautiful element
such as a fountain or waterfall. These pumps are not cheap, though,
so be prepared when you are going to buy one. Using all of these suggestions,
you should be able to enjoy a healthy Koi pond.
