Koi pond water
testing is necessary once in a while to test the levels of ammonia,
Nitrates, PH, and salt. You need to control the nitrogen cycle in
your pond. The nitrogen cycle is basically biological filtering –
fish waste turns into ammonia, ammonia is eaten by bacteria and then
turned in nitrates which are good for the plants.
Too much ammonia in a pond means death for your fish. This is created
when you overfeed the Koi and there are not enough ammonia-eating
bacteria to control the levels. This is where Koi pond water testing
comes in. You need to test the water occasionally to make sure it
is still healthy for the fish and plants. When you get a Koi pond
water testing kit, you need to be sure that it can test all 4 parts
as all need to be at correct levels to maintain optimum health.
The levels you should be looking for when you do Koi pond water testing
are the following: Ammonia – less than 1.5 ppm, pH balance –
6.8 to 7.4, Nitrates – less than 5 ppm, and Salt - .10% to .20%.
These levels should maintain your Koi pond at an optimal healthy level.
