Snow
and ice constrict the flow of oxygen in your pond and trap dangerous
gases inside. Left covered for months your fish can die! But don’t
worry; this problem is easily solved by purchasing a pond
heater.
Pond heaters sit on the bottom of your pond and heat the water. All
you have to do is place it under the water and plug it in. It is recommended
to place the heater in the deepest part of the pond. Make sure to purchase
one that says it is safe to use with a pond liner so that it won’t
burn through.
There are also heaters that float on the surface of the pond but these
do NOT heat the water. Floating heaters create a round hole on the surface
of the ice which keeps oxygen coming in and toxins going out. If you
have fish and other pond animals then you will need a submersible pond
heater to help them get through the winter as this type of heater will
actually heat the water temperature. After a big snow storm make sure
to clear the snow off of the top layer of your pond to allow the floating
heater to work better.
Other devices that will help your pond survive through the winter include,
pond netting, wheat germ, pond domes, and much more.
