A pond garden
is different from other gardens in the fact that you use aquatic plants
in a pond garden. The two different categories of plants used in a
pond garden are submerged oxygenator plants and floating oxygenator
plants. The submerged plants are planted directly into the biological
media underneath the water. The floating plants are planted directly
onto the surface of the water.
Some of the submerged plants that you use in a pond garden are Anacharis,
Vallisneria, Hornwort, and Red Ludwigia. These are mainly just green
plants that look similar to seaweed, but provide much needed nutrients
to the water. Some of the floating plants used in a pond garden are
Water Lilies, Parrots Feather, Water Hyacinths, and Water Lettuce.
These plants, though also providing nutrients, are more for decorative
purposes in your pond garden.
Water Lilies come in a variety of bright, beautiful colors such as
purple, blue, red, pink, yellow, and white. They can be very showy
and are definitely the star of any pond garden. Water Hyacinths are
a soft purple-blue and lovely, as well. But be warned about Water
Hyacinths, in some areas of the world they are considered weeds and
they grow rapidly. The other floating plants provide a nice green
background to the Lilies and Hyacinths. Using these plants, your pond
garden will be a beautiful centerpiece of your backyard.
