Pond life
includes plants, fish, insects, etc. Not all pond life will get along,
especially certain types of fish, so make sure you research what you
are buying. A healthy pond is a balanced pond.
When it comes to fish, goldfish are pretty much always a safe bet.
They can survive in almost any environment. Koi fish are also a very
popular choice as they are very beautiful. However, they can grow to
be quite large, so Koi may not be appropriate for smaller ponds.
Pond plants include bog plants, submerged plants, and floating plants.
(See our section on pond plants to help you pick out the right plants
for your environment).
Algae is an essential part of any healthy pond environment. But too
much of it can lead to green water and constrict the amount of oxygen
other pond life is receiving. Too much algae is usually caused by too
many nutrients in the water. However, regulating this is simple. Plants
eat up nutrients in the water so make sure your pond has a good number
of plants in it.
Pond life can also include pond sounds. Be creative. Buy a CD or create
one yourself and hide a recording behind your plants.
Most importantly take good care of your pond life! Clean your filter,
use items like a pond rake and pond netting to keep your pond clean.
A pond can be a beautiful serene addition to your yard, but without
the right care of your pond life it can wind up looking like a dirty
hole in the ground.
