Water lilies
pond plants are the showpiece of any water garden. But if you
are going to grow water lily pond plants, then remember to plant very
few other plants. Water lily pond plants need a lot of sunlight and
warm weather to grow well. They usually thrive in places where there
are few other plants to compete with. It is still recommended for
you to plant submerged plants, but if you have water lily pond plants,
don’t plant other floating plants.
There are three categories of water lily pond plants: Hardy, Tropical,
and Dwarf. Hardy water lilies will usually bloom in late Spring to
early Fall. They will winter over in areas where it doesn’t
get too far below freezing. You can find Hardy water lilies in colors
of pink, red, white, yellow, salmon, orange, and peach colors. The
Dwarf water lily pond plants will also winter over. They start out
as a yellowish color, then turn red after a couple of days.
The Tropical water lily pond plants are gorgeous in color, but they
will not winter over. They will only survive in water temperatures
over 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The tropical water lilies come in colors
of red, pink, blue, purple, white, orange and yellow. There are even
a species of Tropical water lily pond plants that bloom at night.
The leaves of the water lily pond plants grow large and many blooms
will grow a foot tall over the surface of the water. This is why the
water lily pond plants can be the centerpiece of your garden pond.
